Oklahoma Trip
Posted On 06/07/2008 00:37:29 by Dawg

Me and my buddies have had a trip to Oklahoma planned for 8 months turkey hunting. As each month passed the more excited I got, I love rio's. So we left on a wed and got to Oklahoma city to spend the night around midnight, I couldn't sleep. Got up on thurs and headed on to camp, the hunters before us had already gone, so the guides were going to take us out that afternoon. We were not supposed to hunt until friday morning, but we got unpacked and headed out. The wind was blowing about 30 to 40 mph and drizzling rain, not good conditions. When we arrived at the spot I was going to hunt there were a bunch of jake's and hen's already there. The guide said I will drive in and run them off, they will come back, they are going to roost in those tree's below were I was going to sit. So we did, and I set up thinking yeah right, I want see anything today. I picked up my box call and hammered on it a couple times and about 30 min went by before I heard a gobble behind me. Turned around and saw 4 jakes and some hens, so I picked up my glass call and called the jakes right on in. I thought ok I will play with guys for a while, they got right on top of me. I swear a hen could have leaned over and plucked my eyes out. So as I was playing with them, with my mouth call, I noticed the jakes looking to my left and run off about 20 yards putting. I eased around and saw ole big boy strutting! I eased my gun up and he run about 40 yards and stopped. I cut at him and he picked his head up and I shot. He flipped over on his back, flapped his wings a couple times, and put both feet in the air and waved bye to me! Over in about 45 mins my first of 2 lay on the ground. Got back to camp and 2 more guys out of a 5 man group had also killed good birds. Woke up the next day and headed out with a long time friend geterdone Dave, we set up on some birds had 2 long beards 15 yards away and some cows charged at them and run them off, holy crap. So went to another spot spotted a couple long beards with alot of hens, we put the sneak on them cause they wasn't coming to any calling. We got about 50 yards from them, duck walking, crawling, and even on our belly's sliding toward them. We decided to stand and shoot, 1 on the left 1 on the right deal, we stood and shot. I didn't hear Dave shoot and my bird was flopping, I asked him if he shot and he said yeah, mine's flopping, he said his was too. I thought we shot the same bird because I only saw one when I stood up to shoot. We walked down to the bird and there laid 2 birds about 10 yards a part left and right. These birds weighed the same to the ounce, had the same spur length on each side, and the same beard length, unreal. Both birds are at the taxidermist getting mounted the same too now. Got back to camp 4 more birds were dead from the other guys. So the next morning I went with another buddy, stumpy, got 4 long beards off the roost, called them with in 15 yards and 3 shots were fired, no bird. So he was out of shells and we were waiting on the guide to pick us up and heard a gobble. I picked up my call and played, another long beard came in about 30 yards of us, no shells. We played with him for a while, until 6 jakes come in and run him off. But we went back to camp and he got a bird that afternoon. All in all, 5 people went and 11 birds come home, one in Kansas. All of us will be going back next year, maybe stumpy will take more shells.
