Shed Dogs
Posted On 08/06/2011 11:20:02 by HuntressRackedUp

OK folks....

I have 2 new pups...they are going to be shed dogs..I hope. I need all helpful hints if anyone has trained shed dogs. I have read probably 10 articles on the subject. Keep in mind, my family has been raising English pointers , and full Llewellyn's for over 50 yrs. I have the basics down. Please be specific. Thank ya'll in advance for your input!

My friend trained his Lab to retrieve sheds.  He'd toss antlers in the kennel with it and let it play with them.  The he'd lay some in the yard within sight, and have the dog retrieve them.  Next he'd hide some around the yard and tell him to fetch up the bones. Lastly he took him out to the hills and hid a few and had him find them.  He did pretty good, but had trouble dragging some of the bigger elk sheds back up out of a canyon.

There's a kennel in southern Oregon that's training dogs fro shed hunting.  Their best dogs are something called a Puddlepointer?  Uglier than sin, but I guess their nose can really sniff out discarded antlers!

Gotta love a good dog and it doesn't surprise me at all that multiple breeds have been taught to be good shed hunters! It's all about the hunt, the find & the reward of the love ya give em for being a good dog!
