Comments: Numerous Wildlife Buffet Food Plots and elevated box blinds. This region of Nebraska has one of the highest deer and turkey densities in the state. A 150-class buck was taken during archery season last year.
There is a good restaurant eight miles away, and good trout fishing (catch and release only). Some of the trout can weigh as much as five pounds.
Fall turkey hunting is available after the deer season if approved by your guide. Payment will be detailed at that time.
A hunt deposit of $600 is required when booking and the final payment of $ 1000 is due 30 days before the hunt.
Five Oaks Ranch is located just outside of Bloomfield, NE and offers excellent deer and turkey hunting.
No ATV’s please!
Northeastern Nebraska is a sleeper for whitetail hunting. The Nebraska Game and Parks reports the northeastern corner of the state has the highest population of deer in the state.
This hunt is for one or two bucks. Hunters may shoot one buck on private land and one or more if you like on the 7690 acres of reservation land. You need one Nebraska and one reservation tag - both can be purchased over the counter.
The area has one of the highest populations of whitetails in the nation. A mixture of rolling hills, wood lots, corn, alfalfa, creeks and draws make it ideal for whitetail to continue to expand.
The semi-guided hunt on Five Oaks Ranch is a one-of-a-kind experience. The ranch has food plots, mineral licks, two large springs, tower blinds, ridge stands, CRP and numerous trails that get hot on opening morning when hunters push additional deer in from adjacent reservation property. The deer head for the safety of the private property on the ranch. The ranch has 320 acres of prime whitetail habitat with numerous food plots providing deer with a steady dietary supplement during the entire hunting season. You can have one Nebraska tag and one Santee Sioux Indian Reservation tag. This allows you to hunt the ranch and the 7,690 acres of reservation land scattered around the ranch that gets minimal usage each season. Adjacent land in the area is either pasture land or planted in corn, alfalfa or soybeans.
The season dates are set during the rut for rifle hunters and there is still a lot of rutting activity for archery hunters before and after rifle season. This is a great opportunity to hunt the rut.
If things get slow break out your fly rod and try to catch some of the five pound rainbows waiting to break the surface of the cabin grounds pond and Lower River.
Wonder where the best place on the ranch or on the Indian reservation is to hunt - just ask Bill, your guide, who has many years of experience hunting and living on the property.
There are great accommodations at the lodge where you can cook your own meals or drive eight miles down the road to a restaurant that offers home cooked meals. (See the lodge photographs and the two beds in the guest house, deer, turkey, and samples of the hunting area.)
Both Nebraska and the Indian Reservation deer licenses are available over the counter. A map of the reservation and the Five Oaks Ranch will be given to each hunter. I recommend purchasing the license after the hunt is booked.
There is a maximum of five hunters for the opening weekend three-day hunt. Then, five more hunters can hunt for the last five days of the season. They will hunt the 1st of those three days allowing two additional days if needed while the season is still open.
Nebraska Deer Hunting Overview:
The whitetail explosion has come from the east and continues to take Nebraska hunters by storm. The northeast corner of Nebraska is known for having more deer than anywhere in the state. This area used to be mule deer country, but the area has been inundated with whitetails which have pushed most of the mule deer out. The fantastic hunting here has been overlooked by whitetail deer hunters for years. Our numerous ranches fill up fast, and most of our bookings are return hunters so open spots are quite limited.
Remember, this is a fair chase hunt for animals that have been spotted and patterned in the area. Bill has patterned the area for years and he is very familiar with the various ranches we hunt.
We have no control over the deer, weather, Mother Nature or acts of God. If you like the thrill of a good fair chase hunt you’ll enjoy the hunts we offer. It’s important as a hunter to match the hunt with the type of hunting you like. Hunting from tree stands, ground blinds or ‘spot and stalk’ techniques all work well. If you’d like to hang you own tree stand please feel free to bring it with you. Any stand is OK so long as it doesn’t damage the trees.
A multitude of food plots and heavy cover provides what the deer are looking for. The food plots are designed for deer and turkey and the blends of seed include annuals and perennials to provide a year round food supply. The plants include brassicas, clovers, alfalfa, milo, millet, peas, buckwheat, chicory, wheat, rafe, treacle, oats and beans. We also fertilize the soil with a balanced ratio of vitamins and minerals including calcium and phosphorus (both major components in deer antlers), amino acids and trace elements. All of this is to help grow healthy deer with large antlers.
We manage predators in the area by shooting any coyotes we see. This gives us a high fawn survival rate. There are no trophy fees or size penalties - you are free to shoot any buck you see. We do not shoot does because we have enhanced the feed and cover level so that we are always looking for more deer production.
Recommended rifles include a .243 or larger with a scope sighted “dead on†at 200 yards.
These are semi-guided deer hunts which will give the hunter all of the assistance that they need. The muzzle loader season is the month of December, and the fall turkey season is open at the same time. During the fall turkey season hunters are not limited to harvesting toms – birds of either sex may be harvested. The spring turkey season is open to shotgun and archery hunters only. All Nebraska licenses are available on the internet. The Reservation licenses are available by calling the reservation.
As the tags are filled, Bill is able to spend time with the remaining hunters. Nebraska requires a mandatory game check of the harvested area and Bill will advise you about the closest check point to the ranch.
Meat can be professionally processed locally - Bill will know the details. (Clients are responsible for this fee). Your hunt includes lodging, field transportation and field care. Fees not included are licenses, permits, meat processing, taxidermy, any shipping cost and cost accrued getting to and from the hunting location. A full-service taxidermist in the area is Kessler Taxidermy – they have 30 years of experience in preserving your trophies. They provide top quality work and a quick turnaround.
A mistake some hunters make is setting their expectations too high after seeing a mounted buck in a sporting goods store or after watching a TV show on monster whitetail bucks. Please keep in mind that most of these show their best hunts which are good for the viewer and advertisers. We have excellent hunting, but it still takes patience. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t score the first morning – you have three days to hunt.
