I have been filming and bowhunting for about 10 years now and it seems whenever I came across a big buck, I was filming someone else. I finally connected last week! If you are an avid reader on my Field Journal (and who isn’t, really) you know I took my wife and kids up North to do some work and hang a new stand. I hunted that stand my first day up there and had no action until 4:30pm. The only deer I saw was a buck and he started making a scrape about 70 yards from me. I grunted to him and he didn’t even look up. It seemed like he was totally uninterested in me.After a few minutes, he moved up the trail a bit and started a new scrape. After working that one over, he made his way towards my stand. When he got to 25 yards and his head was behind a tree, I drew. He quickly hit the hooks and put his nose in the air. Even though I am extremely scent conscious, he knew something wasn’t right. He turned and looked as if he was going to run so I gave him one more grunt.
He stopped and turned and walked right down the trail I needed him to go on. When he went behind another tree, I drew again. I stopped him at 18 yards and put a perfect double lung hit on him. He ran off about 30-40 yards and crashed in my view! I was totally pumped. Not only did I get a moose this year, but also my first buck with a bow!!!!! I am having a great season!
I am going to hunt a couple days in Ohio with my wife’s family next week so hopefully my luck comes with me. I will keep you posted!
Oh yeah, on a side note, everything that could go wrong with my camera did, so I did not get any footage of the shot. I did get the whole recovery so I will post that when I can.
Shoot straight...shoot often.
