After 12 long years of putting in for a tag finaly drew one! My hunting partner and i put alot of miles on glassing till our eyes were bulging to find one worthy of shootin...and i blow it opening morning the shooter i was after was not tall but had lots of mass for an antelope in oregon probably at least 16 tall but very heavy. Opening morning found him on a large Private land prarie problem with that was there were 5 other hunters watching him from the road. His nanny's got nervous and bolted for the hills(to my advantage) i knew from watching him where he liked to escape so headed there to hopefully cut him off if no one got him first. worked good except for the fact that i was expecting to shoot at least 300 yards but 400 if i had too..so i waited for him to cross the scab flat where they escaped into the trees...stated counting as the nannies blew by at mock 5 he was the last one in a line of 12...11 nanies then him after hearing a couple shots my heart sank thinking someone else got MY billy..all 11 nanies flew into the trees as only an animal running 55-60 mph can do!no billy then i look way to my left and there he is standin broadside at less than 70 yards looking right at me gun up good shot and BOOM 2 1/2 inches high right where my gun is sighted in...forgot to bring it down and he was gone.I was upset at having missed him think there was my 1 chance to get a good one., looked for the bunch for most of the day but they dissapeared:(
Second day was foggy so couldn't do much glassing we decided to drive up into the timber where there was no fog and glass the few scab flats we knew of and on the way i spot something walking about 200 yards into the timber...could it be? It was an antelope a nice one but not the one i wanted after thinking about it for a split second and hearing my hunting buddy say there he is thats your antelope...went after him and to my surprise he didnt run just watched as i slipped in on him got to within 150 yards and dropped the crosshairs an inch and let him have it...dropped in his tracks ! He is not the biggest or the best but he is mine and had a hunt i will never forget, and happy to have shared the experience with a good friend !
